Understanding the full moon and the moon calendar
This page is not only about dates. It also explains the astronomy behind the full moon, time zones, lunar phases and special events.
How does a full moon happen?
A full moon happens when the Sun, Earth and Moon are almost aligned and the side of the Moon facing Earth is fully lit by sunlight. The Moon does not produce its own light, it reflects it.
Why does the time change by time zone?
The astronomical event happens at the same instant worldwide, but every region displays it in local clock time. The same full moon can therefore fall in the early morning in Switzerland and still on the previous evening elsewhere.
Why are there 12 or 13 full moons?
A synodic month lasts about 29.53 days. Because of that, most calendar years contain 12 full moons, while some years fit in 13.
Full moon, supermoon, blue moon and lunar eclipse
A full moon is the normal lunar phase. A supermoon happens near perigee, a blue moon is usually the second full moon in a calendar month, and a lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon moves through the Earth’s shadow.
How is the live moon status calculated?
Illumination, moon age, phase and moon sign are recalculated for the current moment. That means the display changes continuously between two full moons instead of showing only fixed calendar data.
Moon calendar in everyday life
Many people use a moon calendar for gardening, self-care, rituals or personal timing. On this site, those practical suggestions are intentionally kept separate from the exact astronomical full moon times.

Where the data comes from and how the calculations work
The site combines locally stored full moon dates, astronomical calculations and browser-side time zone adjustment. The goal is a clear and transparent presentation of the data.
Source data for full moon dates
Full moon dates primarily come from JSON files stored on the server. This keeps delivery fast and avoids relying on a live external request every time someone opens the page.
When the astronomical fallback is used
If a year is missing from the local dataset, the PHP layer calculates the full moon times astronomically. That fallback keeps the yearly overview usable beyond the locally stored range.
Live calculation for phase and illumination
Static full moon dates are not the same as the current moon status. Illumination, moon age, phase name and part of the visual display are recalculated for the current moment.
Time zones and local display
The server first renders times in Europe/Zurich. After that, the browser converts marked timestamps into the visitor’s local time zone so the same astronomical instant remains readable worldwide.
Why the method is shown openly
The site deliberately separates stored full moon dates, live moon-status calculations and editorial explanations. That makes it easier to understand where individual pieces of information come from.
Official sources and references
- U.S. Naval Observatory: Moon Phases
- NASA Science: Lunar Phases and Eclipses
- NASA SVS: Moon Phase and Libration
These links act as references for lunar phases, eclipses and the broader astronomical context. The site then presents the data in its own interface and in local time.
